Adjiedj Bakas is a highly acclaimed trendwatcher, author and speaker, living in The Netherlands with roots in India, Latin-America and Europe. Albert Willemsen

Albert Willemsen previously worked as a qualified designer and engineer in the aerospace industry, specifically within the department of Defence, Royal Fokker Aircraft Manufacturer and the European Space Association (ESA) - specialising in systems and testing in projects such as the F16 and Arianne Space Rocket.

Willemsen also acted as an adviser/consultant for BOVAG (the Dutch National Automotive Association) which grew to 13,000 members during his five-year term.

Since 1988, Willemsen has worked in the boating, marina and superyacht industries, initially as part of the HISWA Holland Marine Industry constructing superyachts. In 2005, Willemsen was appointed as the International Council of Marine Industry Associations’ (ICOMIA) Environment Consultant, specialising in superyacht coatings and environmental legislation.

Alex Beere

Alex Beere BEng (Hons) CEng MICE is Head of Consultancy. A Chartered Civil Engineer with 25 years’ experience covering a broad spectrum, Alex now heads up MDL’s consultancy and projects division. In the 10 years that Alex has been with MDL he has completed countless marina design and construction projects. Alex’ professional approach and technical training, combined with his attention to detail, always results in high quality work, innovative designs and all delivered with excellent customer service. Alex has also been a keen sailor for over 20 years and is able to feed his experience as a marina customer into his work as a marina consultant.

During the last 10 years the main focus of OCIBAR has been enlarging Port Adriano ( making of it probably the most innovative marina in the world and building it as a tourism destination. Designed by Philippe Starck the project was a 95M€ investment financed through private equity funds and banks.

He also is president of ANADE, the Balearic Marinas Association, member of the board of AEGY (Large Yachts Spanish Association), shareholder and Board Member of San Juan de Bargas S.A. / General Eólica Aragonesa, shareholder and Board Member at Focus on Emotions / Altabox and board member at Smartsea.

In 1994 he reached the 6th position in the 3/4 Ton class World Championship sailing.

Bob Nathan

Bob Nathan has more than 35 years of professional engineering experience encompassing all elements of waterfront projects and serves as Moffatt & Nichol’s Waterfronts and Marinas Practice Leader. He is responsible for providing oversight and guidance in the planning and design of marinas, urban waterfront developments and cruise ship facilities for public and private clients throughout the U.S. and the world. Bob’s experience ranges from providing technical support for the acquisition of permits, to managing and completing the design and construction documents for waterfront aspects of large resort and urban shoreline developments. He has led and participated in more than 300 waterfront and marina planning and design projects, including marina market studies.

Bob recently completed two terms as a U.S. delegate on the Recreational Navigation Commission of the Permanent International Association of Navigation Congresses (PIANC), based in Brussels. He recently served as Chairman of Working Group 134, which published Design and Operational Guidelines for Superyacht Facilities. Bob is a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), Urban Land Institute (ULI), and Association of Marina Industries (AMI).

Brian May

Brian May achieved degrees in Economics and History at Stanford University, California. He worked as an investment manager before joining the family run Berthon Boat Company in 1989 as MD.

With 150 employees all full time and in-house, Berthon is unusually a truly vertically integrated operation with modern marina & yard facilities, including dedicated specialist spray paint sheds and actively prevents subcontractors on site.

The brokerage and new boat sales division sells up to 200 yachts a year from three offices worldwide (UK, S France, & RI, USA).

Brian has raised £1.5m to pay 70 competitor marine SMEs’ first year apprentice wages, also giving contractual and mentoring advice resulting in over 120 apprentices employed in businesses not currently training. Berthon were ‘Medium Employer of the Year at the National Apprenticeship Awards 2009’ and nominated Top 100 Apprentice Employer 2011.

Carol Fulford

After graduating from the University of London, Carol Fulford, editor & co-owner of Marina World, trained as a shipping journalist. She contributed to and edited several trade magazines in this field in addition to writing extensively for luxury goods publications, yachting and property titles. Further to editing Marina Operator International, Marina International and Waterfront Development International over a seven year period, Carol joined forces with Julia Hallam to launch Marina World in September 2000. Over the past 16 years, Marina World magazine has earned a strong reputation as an important industry resource and Carol undertakes much of the research and writing herself.

Dan Reading is a Chartered Environmentalist working for The Green Blue, a joint environmental initiative of British Marine and the Royal Yachting Association.

Based in Hamble, Dan works with marinas across the UK primarily undertaking environmental audits and helping marinas meet the Gold Anchor Scheme’s environmental criteria.

Dan was the Sustainability Manager for the sailing events at the London Olympic Games and has specialised in helping businesses implement ISO environmental and sustainability standards. To date, he has worked with a number of high profile organisations, including America’s Cup Event Authority, Land Rover Ben Ainslie Racing, Powerboat P1 and Cowes Week.

Outside of the marine sector he has helped the Wimbledon Championship, Goodwood and Rio 2016 with ISO 20121, a standard for sustainable events.

Darren Vaux

Darren Vaux is Managing Director of Empire Marina Bobbin head in Sydney, Australia, twice winner of the Australian Marina of the Year and the first marina to be inducted into the Australian Marina Hall of Fame. Darren was the foundation Chairman of the Boating Industries Alliance Australia and is currently Vice President of the Marina Industries Association of Australia, Past-President and current director the Boating Industry Association in Australia and Chairman of the Ministerial Maritime Advisory Council in New South Wales.

Dennis Kissman

Dennis Kissman has been in the recreation industry for over thirty-eight years and in 1988 began Marina Management Services Inc. (MMS) an internationally recognized management and consulting firm specializing in marinas.

Dennis is a member of the National Marine Manufacturers Association (NMMA) and represents the Association on the International Council of Marine Industry Associations (ICOMIA) International Marinas Group. He has also served on the Board of Directors of the Marina Operators Association of America (MOAA) now called the Association of Marina Industries (AMI) from 2002 – 2004 and was the Chairman of MOAA’s Marina Financing Committee. Dennis is an active member of the Marine Industry Association of South Florida and has served on several sub-committees of the Association.

Speaking engagements include several Docks and Marina Conferences sponsored by the University of Wisconsin School of Engineering as well as Association of Marina Industries conferences and several state and regional Marina Trade Associations. The 1996, 1999, 2002, 2005, 2008, 2011 and 2014 International Marina Conferences held in Genoa, Italy, Fort Lauderdale, Florida, Sydney, Australia, San Diego, California, Oostende, Belgium, Singapore and Istanbul, Turkey respectively as well as several International Marina Institute’s educational conferences. Dennis served as a member of the International Marina Institute (IMI) where he served as committee chair, authored the “Standardized System of Accounts for Marinas and Boatyards”.

Since 1995, Dennis has published over one hundred marketing, financial and management columns in MARINA DOCKAGE a marina trade publication. Elio Ciralli

Dr. Eng. Elio Ciralli was born (1961) in Palermo and lives mainly in Sicily, Italy. Doctor in civil hydraulic engineering with a final thesis in coastal engineering. Since 1988 professional consultant. He is technical director of Progetti e Opere srl – Envitek ™ engineering firm.

He is involved in several projects of infrastructures, planning and design of commercial, fishing and recreational ports. He is an expert in rehabilitation of waterfronts and a renown marina designer.

He has several publications on his CV about coastal engineering and others matters. Active in PIANC International, he is the Chairman of the Recreational Navigation Commission and director of the Marina Designer Training Program.

He is president of the Italian Marine and Off-Shore Engineering Association (A.I.O.M.).

Gary Groenewold

Captain Gary Groenewold, CMM is Vice President for Westrec Marinas, the largest Marina owner/operators in the United States. Responsible for all operations and business development throughout Florida, the Caribbean, South and Central America, he has over 20 years’ experience working on marina development and consulting projects which encompassed the design, construction, and operation of a variety of marina facilities offering both wet and dry storage and their ancillary amenities.

Gary has served on the Executive Board of the International Superyacht Society (ISS) since 2004. He is an active member of the Marine Industries Association of South Florida (MIASF), American Boat Builders and Repairers Association (ABBRA), and the International Marina Institute Gary is the Chairman Emeritus of the Association of Marina Industries (AMI) and a recent member of the Board of the National Marine Manufacturers Association (NMMA). Geert Dijks

Mr. Geert Dijks MA is Managing Director at HISWA Holland Marine Industry.

James Beaver

James Beaver, Director Marina Commercial Services at Moffatt & Nichol, is a marinas specialist having occupied senior management and director roles in the marine, luxury hotel and leisure sectors. With over 25 years’ industry experience, James has overseen the design, construction, commissioning, redevelopment and operational management of many high profile marinas across Europe, USA, Middle East, Africa, Asia, Brazil, UK and the Caribbean. James joined Moffatt & Nichol from Camper and Nicholsons Marinas, where he held the positions of Chief Operating Officer and Operations Director. Joining Camper & Nicholsons in 2009, James was responsible for all owned and managed C&N marinas and businesses worldwide. Highlights included heading the management team in the collaborations with Yas Marina, home to the Abu Dhabi Formula One Grand Prix.

During his time with Dean & Reddyhoff Marinas, for whom he worked for over eight years, James was responsible for several projects, which included the £30m development of a 600 berth marina and dry stack operation in Portland, Dorset, which was the host venue for the sailing events for the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. Introduced to sailing by his father at the age of four, James first got involved in the yachting industry in 1988, when he was the director of a sailing holiday business in Greece. This venture led to managing a marina, golf and five-star hotel operations on Loch Lomond in Scotland.

Jean-Michel Gaigné

Jean-Michel Gaigné CMM is a long time expert in the international yachting sphere. He successively organised the famous Tour de France à la Voile sailing event, has been Communications Manager of a worldwide nautical company and developed new marina facilities. John Hogan

Jon White

Jon White was recruited to the role of General Manager for The Yacht Harbour Association in April 2014 following 18 years with the Royal Yachting Association where he headed the sport development team working with the commercial and voluntary deliverers of sailing and boating. Prior to that he worked for a short period in the Middle East after 10 years with Mitsubishi. Ever since trying canoeing with the sea scouts at the age of 12 Jon has been fanatical about watersports and over the years has gained significant experience in all sectors of the leisure boating market.

Jose Luis Fayos is currently founder of Global Management Marine Consultancy, a Spanish leading marine consultancy. Jose Luis is also the Technical Advisor to the Spanish Marine Trade Association (ANEN). He is engineer and a well know speaker on the worldwide circuit and has the respect of the industry. Jouko Huju

Dr Jouko Huju, ICOMIA President, has been Chief Executive Officer of the Finnish Marine Industries Federation – Finnboat – since 1996.

Previously his career included positions in the Finnish exporting, communication and export promotional industries, serving both the private and governmental sectors. He holds a master's and doctoral degree in business administration.

Dr Huju has served two terms spanning 13-years as a member of the International Council of Marine Industry Associations’ (ICOMIA) main governing board, the Executive Committee, serving as ICOMIA President from 2004-2006. He was recently re-elected as President once again, during the 2016 ICOMIA Annual General Meeting.


Julian Goldie

Julian Goldie is Managing Partner of Tollesbury Marina since 1988 and has been investing in the development and improvement of Tollesbury Marina throughout his career. Their full service marina offers full boatyard facilities, a yacht repair centre, an on-site Chandlery, and the well known Yacht Brokerage operation ’Woodrolfe Brokerage’. They also own and operate their own Yacht Club, with leisure facilities of a covered heated swimming pool and 2 hard tennis courts, together with a restaurant.

He has been a member of the Transeurope Marina Association since 1999, and spent three years as Chairman in the early 2000s.

He has been a Council Member of The Yacht Harbour Association for the last 11 years, working on a number of sub-committees over the years, and Chaired the association for a three year term until 2013. He has continued to be a huge supporter of TYHA, and currently serves as the International Director.

Kenny Jones is MBE CMM is Executive Vice President at IGY Marinas. Prior to joining IGY 8 years ago, Kenny was the Operations Director for one of the largest Marina operators in Europe. To date, Kenny has managed over 37 marina focused facilities, in over 14 different countries and cultures, including hundreds of commercial and retail units, over 15 boat yards, F&B businesses, as well as one or two hotels. Kenny’s experience has covered small domestic vessel marinas facilities, right through to very large super yacht facilities.

Marleen Maarleveld

Marleen Maarleveld is director of Water Leisure Netherlands. Water Leisure Netherlands is a foundation in which both private and public parties involved in water leisure participate. Aim of the foundation is to improve water leisure in The Netherlands. As such, the foundation aims to realize the ambitions formulated in the Vision Water Leisure 2025 presented by the water leisure sector in 2011. In her presentation, Marleen will share best practices and lessons learned regarding the creation of different types of public-private partnerships and the transformation of the foundation to achieve its aims. 

Martinho Fortunato

Martinho Fortunato is 42 years old. He is an Engineer with an MBA in General Management and a Post-graduation in Golf Course Management. He is a CMM (Certified Marina Manager) since May 2005, after he finished the Advanced Marina Management School.

He is CEO of Marlagos, SA the company owner of Marina de Lagos, in Algarve – Portugal (462 berth). Started as manager of the Marina in May 2000 and during this years he has managed the marina, the commercial area around the marina and the construction, opening and management of a 4* Hotel Development in the Marina (Marina Club Suite Hotel – 140 rooms, SPA and restaurant).

He is the CEO of Centro Náutico de Algés – The Lisbon Boatyard. Boatyard with 6 hectares in Lisbon city.

He is also member of the Board of Directors of the Holding company (MSF- Tur.Im, SGPS). The MSF Group has other Tourism and Real Estate developments in Portugal and abroad.

He was the President of the Portuguese Marina and Ports Association (APPR) during 6 years, he is now Vice President. He is the Commodore of the Lagos Sailing Club and a member of the Lagos Tourism Commission. He is also member of the board of IMCI (International Marine Certification Institute) and a member of the ICOMIA (International Council Of Marine Industry Associations) Marina’s Group.

Mike Ward

As Managing Director for Marina Projects, Mike Ward heads up the consultancy side of this international business, and has involvement in every project undertaken by the company. Mike leads a team of 15 marina industry professionals offering services that range from concept design and feasibility study all the way through to operational management.

Mike is qualified in maritime civil engineering and has an extensive project management background and has some 30 years' experience in all aspects of the delivery of marinas and marine construction works, including dredging, pontoon installations, environmental and legislative issues.

He has particular skill in identifying a concise scope of work that will meet the project requirements and the delivery of clearly structured guidance and advice to the client. He has significant experience in the preparation and development of business case analysis and viability studies. Mike is currently working on a range of international consultancy based and development schemes on projects covering marinas and waterfront development, water sports centres, dry stack developments and marine employment sites.

Nanke den Daas

Nanke den Daas is CEO of Den Daas Recreation, a family owned company, specialized in the development, acquisition and exploitation of high quality leisure projects with focus on marina’s in The Netherlands. Having a degree in Biochemistry and Veterinary Medicine she started her career in research and development in the cattle industry. In 2004 she succeeded her father as CEO of Den Daas Recreation. Today she manages and operates a total of four high quality marina’s. Her challenge is to further develop and exploit leisure services in a world that has changed 360 degrees in the past eight years. Nicky Vaux

Nicky Vaux is Sales Director of Empire Boat Sales a division of Empire Marina Bobbin Head in Sydney, Australia, twice winner of the Australian Marina of the Year and the first marina to be inducted into the Australian Marina Hall of Fame. The contribution that women make in the decisions to buy and retain a boat is often overlooked as traditionally marinas and boat brokerages have catered to their predominantly male clientele. Too often have wives & partners felt disengaged from the boating experience as they are relegated to the roles of deckhand and caterer. Nicky’s presentation will provide case studies of a range of initiatives that include boating skills and social activities that have dramatically increased the engagement and enjoyment of women in the boating lifestyle centred around the marina.

Oscar Siches

With navy school background and as offsshore racing and cruising yachtsman, Oscar Siches has broad experience in the boating industry having skippered sail and power yachts in the Med and the Caribbean.

Having been partner and manager during 15 years of two marinas in Maallorca Oscar is consultant for projects in various countries, and designer of customized marina elements.

He is a Certified Marina Manager, director of the Global Marina Institute and member of ICOMIA's Marinas Committee, member and news responsable of PIANC RecCom, Spanish expert in yacht harbors at the ISO organization and founding member of the Asia Pacific Superyacht Association.

Paul Cook

Paul is the General Manager of OneOcean Port Vell, a new luxury resort marina in the heart of Barcelona. Paul’s 30+ years’ experience in the marine and superyacht industry started in the Royal Navy. His Naval career lasted 25 years spanning 14 ships with 3 appointments as Captain of frontline warships. In 2006 he moved into the superyacht industry as a captain on MY Anna, a 67metre Feadship. More recently he has been the COO and MD of yacht orientated businesses.

Reinier Steensma

Prior to founding WA Yachting Consultants in 1998, Reinier Steensma was Senior Buyer at Amels Holland, one of the exclusive mega-yacht builders in the Netherlands and Managing Director of Flevo Marina in Lelystad. Bernarda Renata Marević is manager of the Marina Punat, Croatia since July 2011. Previous she was reception manager at the Marina Punat (customer service, sales & marketing). She studied at Libertas International University, Zagreb.

Punat marina is one of the largest at the Adria with 1000 moorages + 300 dry berths, biggest member of the Marina Punat Group. High environmental standards, ISO standard certificate 14001 for environmental management and 9001 for quality assurance, most awarded marina in Croatia. Roberto Perocchio

Managing Director of Venezia Terminal Passeggeri S.p.A. (the cruise port of Venice) from 2005, Roberto Perocchio is born in Aschaffenburg (Germany) on September 22nd 1961. Graduated from law, he also manages three companies working in the creation and management of pleasure boating facilities and tourist villages, such as Marina del Cavallino S.r.l., holding the Yacht Harbour "Marina del Cavallino". Furthermore he is currently President of ASSOMARINAS (Italian Marinas Association).

Since 1990 he is member of the Executive Council of UCINA (Italian Marine Industry Association).

Since 1991 he is member of the Boating Facilities Development Board of ICOMIA (International Council of Marine Industries Associations with headquarter in London) being appointed Chairman in September 2009 and working in the organization of the World Marina Conference of ICOMIA, which takes place every 2 years.


Simon Arrol

Simon Arrol is a maritime civil engineer and a Fellow of the Institution of Civil Engineers of Great Britain. Following 15 years in the dredging industry, much of it with Royal Boskalis Westminster, in 1988 he moved to the yacht marina sector. He has undertaken marina consultancy, development, and management assignments in 40 countries and for 16 years headed the marina division of Camper & Nicholsons. In 2005 he moved to Dubai to co-found Island Global Yachting where he designed and developed marinas on the iconic Palm Island. He remains based in Dubai where works with Marinetek Middle East & Asia and also holds the position of Group Marina Consultant. Simon has been a keen yachtsman since a young age and is a member of the Royal Lymington Yacht Club.

Sophie Bachet Granados

Sophie is the International Director of the worldwide renowned Blue Flag eco-label, run by the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE). Her six-year experience at this position and her ten-year experience in the Foundation for Environmental Education both enable her to lead the programme towards excellency of environmental coastal management, in close relationship with the FEE members worldwide. The new development of Blue Flag award towards sustainable boating tourism operators in 2016 is one of the new challenges which she is excited to grow within the network of 49 countries running the Blue Flag, as well as with the new countries working on the implementation of the programme.

One of Sophie’s joys is to dive and reconnect with the marine world whenever she has the opportunity to do so.

Stephane Millot

Stephane Millot is one of the main shareholders of the innovative company S2F network. Stephane Millot has a 20-year-long experience in engineering and sales management for telecom operators and IT companies. He is now the General manager of S2F network. Tom Warren

Tom Warren is a highly experienced and well known identity in the New Zealand marine industry. He has extensive knowledge of marine-based businesses, with a track record of success in planning, development and operations to ensure above benchmark growth and commercial performance.

Tom is member of the Panuku Development Auckland’s executive team (previously Waterfront Auckland). He is responsible for the staff and operations of Westhaven Marina,1900 berths (the largest recreational marina in the southern hemisphere) Silo Marina (super yacht marina) 13 berths up to 140 metres, Viaduct Harbour Marina, Wynyard Crossing, Halsey Extension Wharf, Hobson Wharf, North Wharf, part of Wynyard Wharf. Oversight of marina development for maritime infrastructural upgrades.

At present Tom is Chairman of the Board for the governance of Industry Training Organisation Board and Executive Board member for NZ Marine. He is actively involved in NZ Marine Refit Committee since 1996. Tom is deputy Chairman and on the Executive Committee for the NZ Marina Operators Association (NZMOA) - 2012 to present.

Tone Britovsek

Tone Britovsek M.Sc., IRM’s owner and Marina Master‘s founder has more than 24 years’ experience and knowledge in marina management solution worldwide. He has also expertise in investment banking management, preparing solutions in cooperation with different banks since 1992.

He holds a master’s degree in IT Operation Research, Faculty of Economics. Udo Kleinitz

The International Council of Marine Industry Associations’ (ICOMIA) Secretary General, Udo Kleinitz, holds the German master craftsman qualification in boatbuilding, which he obtained during the 15 years working in yards at the lakes in the Munich area.

In 2008 Udo relocated to UK after being appointed as Technical Manager at ICOMIA - a post he held for five years, before leaving to join British Marine as Head of Technical Services.

Udo returned to ICOMIA in June 2015 as Secretary General; his extensive industry knowledge and expertise enables ICOMIA to continue to represent the global marine industry.

An avid sailor, Udo spends his summer weekends on the water cruising the UK South Coast and the English Channel.

Vasco De Cet – Roma 19.09.1965: Sailor, Navy Officer, skipper, yacht Captain, bareboat base chief, yachting agent, organizational consultant for companies and public administration, technical and professional trainer. Since 2005, Marina Manager at Portisco in Costa Smeralda (Sardinia, Italy). Portisco is a Marina with 589 berths, 21 of which for yachts 35 to over 90 mts long. Since 2013, as Marina Manager, he was the analyst and project manager of an innovative mooring pricing system and a customer fidelity program. He has created, developed and implemented a pricing algorithm similar to low cost airlines pricing system. The system is already operating on-line. Such program has produced about 15%/year increase in income and turnout.

Willem Dekker

Willem Dekker is the current President of the European Boating Association (EBA).

After retiring from the Royal Netherlands Navy, where he served as a Marine Engineering Officer, he worked in a voluntary capacity for the Royal Netherlands Yachting Union (RNYU) as Board Member for recreational water sports (2007-2013). As such he was the representative for this organisation in many national programmes concerned with waterways, safety on the water, legislation, future vision for water recreation etc. 

As the RNYU delegate within the European Boating Association he was elected as President in October 2014. The purpose of the EBA is to represent the mutually agreed common interests of national recreational boat users’ organisations in Europe.


Yp Loke

YP Loke is Managing Director of Singapore-based Spinnaker International, a company specialising in providing business and management solutions to marinas and boating businesses in developing markets.

YP is a member of the ICOMIA Marinas Group and ICOMIA Executive Committee. On the local front, he is chairman of the Singapore Boating Industry Association (SBIA), and council member of the National Maritime Safety at Sea Council (NMSSC).

YP graduated in Naval Architecture from what is now the Solent University in the UK, and also holds a MBA from the Cranfield School of Management, Cranfield University, UK. He is a CMM (Certified Marina Manager).
